Chapter 16

Celeste

Fenris’s Private Villa

Isla Lobo, Panama

After we’d gotten dressed, Fenris left the room briefly only to return with a phone.

I blinked, looking at it. “This isn’t mine,” I said, making a face.

He raised a brow. “Do you have unlimited international calling, or were you hoping your friend was going to foot the bill?”

I blushed and snatched the cell phone out of his hand. “Thanks,” I muttered, looking down at the screen.

Fenris studied me for a moment. I tried not to squirm.

“It’s not a trap,” he said a moment later. “The phone isn’t bugged or anything.”

I frowned, looking the device over before looking up at him. “That’s not what I was thinking.” But I am now. Ugh. Did my face really look that bitchy?

Fenris sighed. “What else can I do?”

I blinked. “What do you mean?”

He motioned with one hand around the room. “While many would consider a private room in a private villa on a private tropical island to be a dream, it’s rather obvious that you’re unhappy,” he said, looking back at me with a raised brow. “I was not kidding when I said I didn’t want something to happen to you.” The corners of his mouth tugged downward. “I know you don’t think much of me, Celeste, but I couldn’t forgive myself if you tried to do something so foolhardy as sail away, only to capsize on the waves and drown.”

I paused, licking my lips. “I’m not going to try and run away again,” I said after a moment. Truth be told, I didn’t want to drown, either, and I was pretty sure I’d be safer here, at least until the storm passed over us. “You know, the one time I went to summer camp, sailing was one of the class options.” I snorted. “I chose a class on learning edible plants instead.”

Fenris smiled. It was a real smile—at least I thought so—and not a fake one. Not placating, either. “That certainly has its uses, too,” he said. “Perhaps you’ll recognize some of the things growing in the forest in the light of day.”

I shrugged. “I’m not exactly looking to go out in the rain. You wouldn’t believe what it does to my hair.”

This time, he laughed and shook his head. “I do love this island,” he said, looking toward the window. “But the humidity is one thing I could certainly do without. Wet wolf smell lingers far, far longer, especially in the rainy season.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. Of all the things I expected him to say, that was nowhere on the list. “I never thought of that,” I admitted, looking back down at the phone in my hand. I was almost afraid to keep looking at him, like I couldn’t stay frustrated with him if I watched him smile for too long. “Do you… I don’t know. If you get wet as a wolf, are your clothes still soggy when you shift back?”

You could hear the humor in his voice now. “It doesn’t quite work like that, thankfully.
